Schedule of Visits and Tests During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, there are a number of tests that are performed to check the health of you and your baby. Below outlines the most common schedule of visits and routine tests we perform as part of your overall obstetric care.

Each visit will include a blood pressure and weight check. After 20 weeks, your belly will be measured to determine the appropriate growth of the baby. A doctor or nurse will listen to your baby's heartbeat with a Doppler at each visit after 12-14 weeks.

If you have a high-risk pregnancy or complications during pregnancy, your schedule and tests will be different from those outlined below. Make sure you follow the schedule as determined by your doctor.

First Trimester (conception to 14 weeks)

Initial Appointment – At your first obstetrics appointment, you will have a complete history and physical examination including a review of your past medical, surgical and family history and a physical exam.

You can also expect:

  • 8-12 weeks: Laboratory testing including blood work and urine testing.

At your first visit you will receive a packet of information about our clinic that includes information on planning a healthy pregnancy, as well as a list of medications that are safe to take while pregnant, and treatment of other common complaints of pregnancy. You can also view the Guide to the Common Complaints of Pregnancy on this site.

Appointments occur once per month during the first trimester.

Second Trimester (14 weeks to 28 weeks)

During your second trimester visits, the health of you and your baby will be evaluated. Any questions or concerns you have will be addressed.

You can also expect:

  • 16-18 weeks: Quad Screening – this is a maternal blood test done to evaluate your baby's risk of Down Syndrome, Trisomy 18 and open neural tube defects. This screening is optional and other aneuploidy screening may be recommended in some pregnancies.
  • 18-20 weeks: Comprehensive ultrasound to evaluate the structures and growth of your baby. The gender can usually be identified on this ultrasound if desired.
  • 24-28 weeks: Gestational diabetes screening.
  • 27+ weeks: Tdap (whooping cough) vaccination will be recommended.

Appointments occur once per month during the second trimester.

Third Trimester (28 weeks until delivery)

During the third trimester visits, we will continue the monitoring started in the second trimester to evaluate fetal growth and we will help you prepare for the delivery.

You can also expect:

35-36 weeks: Evaluation for Group B Strep

37+ weeks: Assessment for signs of labor, appropriate fetal growth, and maternal and fetal well-being.

Appointments occur once every 1-2 weeks during the third trimester.
